Interesting looking project. Single speed bike sounds a bit unusual, but if there's not much hills in Netherlands, I guess it's just fine. My bike has 21 speeds (3x7) and have found use for most of them, at least the first 14 speeds, higher ones only in downhill situations. I drive it only in summer times, so no rust, even I've washed it only once since 2008 when I bought it Oh and I forgot to show a pic of it in my last post:
It's an older pic, before I installed the front and rear lights to it.

Gorgeous bike! I had those Mafac 'racer' centre-pull brakes on one of my road bikes too, they were rather difficult to set up correctly.

I was looking for a replacement for my 200 km/week commuter bike, and that wasn't an easy task. I wanted a Shimano 8-speed hub, roller brakes instead of discs, and front suspension. All new bikes now have disc brakes or rim brakes, and 7-speed seems to be the norm again. A new bike would be rather theft-prone too, and I need to park in some questionable neighbourhoods. So a secondhand bike would be a cost-effective solution but I wanted one with as little wear as possible for a decent price (high demand and high new-bike prices keep used price levels up too). Luckily my favourite thrift store had just acquired a bike that fitted my demands for a rather good price. It needed a few minor things but it’s in good nick and very enjoyable to ride, great to have a bike where everything works for a change- my temporary beater was getting very tired and I was quickly running out of working gears. This is my new bike, a Gazelle Chamonix Excellent made in The Netherlands. And it's all change within a week, because last week my cheap used folding bike broke its rear rim. I'd noticed some fatigue cracks in both rims but I hoped they would last a little longer. They did not, and fixing a split rim is expensive (you need either a new wheel or a new rim and a re-spoke, which is something I'd love to learn someday but I simply don't have the time. Then I found this for sale locally for so little money that I believe someone made a mistake when valuing. I could easily sell it for three times what I paid for it (and will do so when I find something that's 100% what I want). The good stuff: aluminium frame, very easy to fold, 20" wheels, full chain guard, great tyres, everything works. The not so good: B-tier make, 6-speed derailleur (I'd prefer a 3-speed Shimano hub), ugly frame (OK, splitting hairs now), lots of paint damage. All it needed were new handles because the rubber on the old ones was getting sticky, plus a good cleaning/lube/adjustment. No progress on the single speed yet, I've acquired some parts though.

Thanks Julio! I used the Gazelle for my commute today, what a pleasure to ride. Much better than the beater I used before.

I don't have any type of pro quality bike, honestly I do not warrant the expense. I just putt around the neighborhood and do some light shopping from time to time. I am blessed to have a large amount of bike lanes and a bike rider respecting community (for the most part) but I still do not like riding the busier roads. Just pulled mine out of winter storage last weekend.

Nice bike, Jeff!
I used both bikes today for a grand total of 45 km. Most of it- save for the last 5 km- in beautiful weather.

Thanks Julio and Tom. I wish our weather would cooperate more, very wet and windy of late.
