Spa in 1993 was my first Grand Prix as I was living in Belgium at the time. I still have my ticket (3,500 Belgian Francs) and a few (poor) pictures of the day. I still remember that having seen how slow the Lola looked on TV in previous races, I was surprised how quick they looked on track, even though they were running towards the back of the field (the Lola's only finished 13th and 14th because 10 other cars retired).

I know exactly where that is on the track. I took some pictures standing on the roof of the pit lane buildings to the left.

I see it as their problem Jeff, not moine - if only someone had decided to put an Italian engine in one..... (I mean, they did try an Aston martin and look how well that went ). Nice. You're taking over 105epaul's mantle now Ian - he normally has the job of making me green with envy . I know exactly where that is on the track. I took some pictures standing on the roof of the pit lane buildings to the left. Spa is equal top of my bucket list of race tracks I have yet to visit, along with the Nurburgring. I have to say it's one I don't remember. Very interesting addition! I like the way this series is building up a bit of a "Wacky Races" collection for me Jerry - cars I wouldn't normally consider but ones I am enjoying to receive. Please refer the next one for another.

And the Winner of the Best (and highest) Airbox in F1 Award goes to…… the Ligier JS5. No further correspondence will be entered into! The Ligier JS5 is a reasonably well-known and iconic car in F1 history, due to its extravagant airbox, but when doing some research, I was surprised to find that the car only appeared in this configuration for three GPs. Prior to 1976 Ligier’s motorsport activities had revolved around sportscar racing. Ligier was founded by ex-French Rugby international and racing driver Guy Liger in 1968, following his retirement from racing. His decision to retire came after the death of his good friend Jo Schlesser in the 1968 French GP. To honour his friend all Ligier cars carry the “JS” designation. Ligier’s first car was the JS1 a sports racing machine which appeared in 1969. This car was developed into the JS2, which was also available as a road going vehicle – both versions being powered by a Maserati V6, although later racing versions made use of the ubiquitous Ford-Cosworth DFV V8. The DFV also powered Ligier’s next sports racer, the JS3.Having had a modicum of success with their sports racers, in 1976 Ligier took to step up to F1 with the “JS5” – the JS4 designation was used for a four-wheeled, two-seater microcar in 1980, these types of vehicles also being part of Ligier’s repertoire. When fellow French outfit Matra withdrew from racing at the end of 1975, Guy Ligier bought the F1 operations and entered F1 under the “Ligier Formule 1” banner. Backing for the team came from Gitanes, at that time part of the French Government owned SEITA organisation. The team would be 100% French, making use of the Matra 3.0-litre V12 power unit and employing Jacques Laffite for its one-car entry. The JS5 was designed by Gerard Ducarouge and featured the outlandish airbox, garnering the car the nickname of “Teapot”. The team’s first two outings in 1976 ended prematurely, with a broken gear linkage stopping the car in the Brazilian GP, followed by an engine failure at Kyalami for the South African race. The team’s fortunes turned around at the next race, however. In 1976 the inaugural USA Grand Prix West was held on the street circuit at Long Beach in California. Only 20 cars would be allowed to start, and Laffite placed his JS5 12th on the grid, 1.3sec behind Clay Regazzoni’s Pole-winning Ferrari. Laffite was bumped by John Watson’s Penske on lap 4 and the resulting spin saw the Frenchman down in 14th place. Over the remaining 76 laps Laffite drove well and passed several cars. By also taking advantage of the retirements of a number of cars, he brought his Ligier home in 12th place, earning the team their first F1 World Championship points. At the next race, new rules banned the high airboxes and the JS5 now had its air intake only just above the height of the driver's head. By the end of the year Laffite had notched up 20 points to finish 8th in the Drivers Title and tie-up 6th in the Constructors Championship. Utterly (udderly?) ridiculous, but of course it deserves a place in any F1 collection. The rest of it looks quite good as well with some decent wheels and the radiators look nicely done.

Lovely Ligier, I had a soft spot for them. I would buy this if it crossed my path despite GP cars not being my favourite collecting theme. And....I was at Brands Hatch in 1976 for the British Grand Prix and would have seen Monsieur Laffite driving the JS5 replete with wailing Matra V12. That was the race where Regazzoni drove into Niki Lauda at the start with them collecting James Hunt's McLaren at the first corner Paddock Hill Bend - which is where I and friends were standing. Which was nice. No I didn't push any T70s onto the grid and the Taki Racing T70 is in fact a Japanese run car so it was a fair old distance from me. A friend does campaign a T70 Mk3B in historic racing so you never know, I may yet get to push one! Oh and I too have been to Spa back in 1976 and the Nürburgring in 1971. Just saying .
