This was my first go at building a non-Photoshop diorama, and it took months to complete, but it was a wonderful project to tackle. I've only built a couple more 3-D dioramas since then, too.
The Redex Rally race winner, Ken Tubman in the Peugeot 203, is followed into the creek crossing by the Holden of Possum Kipling, who was the man who crossed the finish line first at the end of the Rally in Sydney. On corrected time, Possum came in 10th, still a great result for him and the Holden.
A low-angle 'action' shot of the Pug in the creek. Although this was my first land-based 3-D diorama, I had built a few dioramas for model ships, and so by then I had a nice little method figured out for creating 'moving' lumpy water.
The other really enjoyable part of creating the diorama was modding all the cars to look as close to the real thing as my limited skills would allow. The winning Peugeot 203 of Ken Tubman was actually a plastic Heller kit, while the most enjoyable model of all to mod was this diecast Solido 203 Wagon that formed the basis of the Cinesound news wagon. I pinched the roof rack off a Peugeot 203 postal van, and then made some of the luggage myself from modeller's clay (the red suitcase was a bought item). Fortunately I had some good photos of the original 1952 car (above left) so I was able to re-create historically accurate livery using my laserjet printer and Indesign.
It's incredible that back then, the Around Australia Rally's winning car had the same engine and many other mechanical components as the news crew's car. It was a hell of a good ad for Peugeot toughness and reliability at the time.
