Having recently acquired a few more wall-hung display cabinets, it has given me the opportunity to extract all of my Alfa Tipo 33’s models from their boxes and begin to assemble a display. It has been a long time coming.
Before I continue on the grounds of health & safety, can someone attended to Martin please…………….. he has just spilt his beer and fallen off his bar stool!
Just in case there is anybody else who is likely to come over all unnecessary, don’t get too animated as this is the start of work in progress and will be a slow burner.
Over 12 years ago and leading up to the 2010 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo a few members of our small model club and myself exhibited a display to mark the occasion. Between us, we managed a community spirited display of 100 Alfa Romeo models plus a small diorama in the middle to add some focus.
My model contribution to this display was mainly a selection of T33’s. Over the years since that exhibition, I have continued slowly to collect these fabulous pieces of motoring art. Having now placed my new display cabinets on the wall it has spurred me on to consolidate and produce a stock list. To date I have a collection of some 37, 1:43rd models. A drop in the ocean in comparison to our resident Alfaohlic
I know my place when it comes to all things “blood red Italian” and I fully appreciate there is a pecking order which I am a lowly member. So please feel free to correct me as I proceed.
As with any display I find it’s a question of first seeing the “wood for the tress”, so have for now just placed my models into said cabinet. Having logged what, I have actually got I will eventually place into race/event year order. I will then begin to source in period advertising and pictures and of course labels to give the display more purpose.
First things first, stock taking....
Displayed at random
Not the best of photographs due to reflection of the glass.
Lastly........
I have now managed to sort these models into race date order which has enabled me to realize I have a few gaps to attend to in the future.
In the meantime my grey cells have been working over time as how best to add interest to this display and I think I have come up with a reasonably good if not very time consuming approach. I do like a good back drop to a display so concentrating on the Targa Florio 1967 cars I came up with this.
It is not finished yet as I have just purchased some more Denizen driver figures and Armco barrier to include. The intention will be to make up other back drops for each model/s with association to the event it raced at. These back drops take a great deal of time searching for the right effect but I feel it's worth the effort.
Staying with T33's is 1967 I have now completed backdrops for two more models. I feel I have explored the www enough this weekend for inspiration.
More to follow at a later date.
Just imagine you are in a museum...........
Outside the Autodelta factory.................possibly.
I must apologise for the pause in develop of this post but I have been mildly distracted. The following excuse I'm sure will be accepted.
Without question the extraction of my collection of Alfa T33's from their boxes into this display has been a very enjoyable experience. So much so and to go straight to the point I have actually bought a 1:1 Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce. Always wanted an Alfa, taken me over 60 years but I got there in the end. Who said this hobby can empty a wallet in seconds flat?
Anyway more about that else where, back to the main focus.
I have now completed backdrops for the 1968 models I have in my collection as follows;
Daytona 4th February 1968
Targo Florio 5th May 1968
Bologna-Passo della Raticosa hill climb. 2nd July 1968
500Km Imola 15th September 1968
Le Mans 29th September 1968
I am now working on 1969 so more to come later................... once I've had some fun in a real one!
Okay moving on to 1969 a year I do not have many models of, only 3 actually, so need to fill some gaps at some point.
In the meantime this is my offerings for 69.
TARGA FLORIO 4th May 1969
Le Mans 15th June 1969
As you can see I need to find #36
SAN GIUSTINO TRABARINA HILL CLIMB 27th July 1969
As you can see there is work in progress on the next shelf below. This will be Le Mans 1970.
Just messing around with a few ideas at the moment. Also a potential backdrop for the other competitors entered in the 69 Targa Florio
Welcome to 2022 folks. Who knows what models will excite us this year. In the meantime I continue with my T33 display. Using the Christmas holiday break I have managed to advance into the early 70's now. However the exercise of finding suitable photos, logos and back drops for each model is very time consuming and sometimes hours can be spent with results I'm not happy with. This means returning to the drawings board to come up with other more preferred ideas. It's a bit 5 forward and 3 back at times
Anyway the next selection even though time consuming I am pleased with the results. I only hope you guys approve to.
LE MANS 1970 - 13th & 14th June
Next........
SEBRING 20th March 1971
TARGA FLORIO 16th May 1971
1000 Km NURBURGRING 30th May 197
I have two more models to displays for 1971 but these are blue T33.....................?
For my last visit into 1971 here are two BLUE Alfa's
1971 - "RICCARDONE" (Carlos Benelli), Chassis #11
Time now to move into 1972...............
(BUENOS AIRES 1000Kms) ?? 9th January 1972
SEBRING 12 Hours 25th March 1972
I've had some polite correspondence. Having now double checked my previous Buenos Aires 1,000km #2 it is not quite correct. I am working on an update and will correct in the fullness of time. Thank you to our resident Alfaholic for pointing me in the correct direction.
In the meantime please enjoy the next three.
TARGA FLORIO 21st May 1972
LE MANS 10th & 11th June 1972
LE MANS 9th & 10th June 1973
and lastly as a bit of a re-cap. 1967 to 1973 so far............
I am now nearing the end of this production. It has been a pleasure sharing this work with you all and I'm grateful for all the gratitude shown towards it.
The next batch are from a period of fuel rationing, the 3 day week and when the lights went out on a regular basis. Motorsport was beginning to be affected especially sportcar racing. A 1,000 kms race was sometimes reduced down to 500kms and in some cases 300kms. The competition was not extensive but all the same the cars still looked the business........
Can-Am, Riverside 4th November 1973
1,000 kms Monza, 25th April 1974
Coppa Florio, 1,000 kms 18th May 1975
1,000 kms Nurburgring 1st June 1975
Coppa Florio 4 hours 20th April 1976
And the cabinet looks like this....
and it started out as this...
As we are all in the process of moving "house" I took the privilege of packing some "stuff" and bringing with me. I didn't particularly want to loose this lot as I know one day I will add more T33's to the collection.
For those who expressed interest in our previous home I hope you enjoy it all here. I know a man who said it was his favorite thread!
