I sometimes think that like buttons are a destroyer of conversations on forums, it is the lazy way to acknowledge someones post.
Very interested on your thought s on this because I have no problem shutting the feature off.

I think our group is pleasant and mature enough to post comments like they used to. If not, then so be it.

To my mind, its better to acknowledge someone's post with a like than not acknowledge it at all because you're busy or distracted.
I'd try it and we can always turn it off later if its found to be a conversation killer.
