Practical Classics' Reader's Poll Tribute Practical Classics' Reader's Poll Tribute by Michael, on Flickr Last month the British magazine Practical Classics published the results of a reader's poll for the top 100 collector's vehicles of 2016. For me there were surprises both for what was on the list and what was not. However there were eight Fords on the list, which I have assembled here as Vangaurds models. The rankings were: #92: Sierra, #89: Granada, #76: FWD Escort, #73: Consul Capri, #61: Fiesta, #44: RWD Escort, #7: Capri, #4: Cortina. E.T. "Bob" Gregorie (1908-2002) I've been wanting to stage a E.T. "Bob" Gregorie tribute for years, but it took a long time to acquire the rights models to make it work. E.T. "Bob" Gregorie by Michael, on Flickr Bob Gregorie was Ford's first in-house designer. He was hired by Lincoln in 1931, and assigned by Edsel Ford to design the British Model Y, which he scaled up for the 1933 Ford Model 40. Gregorie became Ford's first chief of design in 1935. He quit in 1943 after Edsel Ford died, was hired back by HF II and quit again in 1946, but not before designing Ford's new products for 1949 -- except for the '49 Ford, which was a big part of the reason he left. He spent the rest of his career designing yachts. www.autolife.umd.umich.edu/Design/Gregorie_bio.htmE.T. "Bob" Gregorie Tribute by Michael, on Flickr E.T. That would be my guess. Styling being for whimps and all that. Here is a photo with some of Gregorie's much less talked about European offspring: E.T. "Bob" Gregorie Tribute by Michael, on Flickr

I'm planning a series of "Country and Plant" tribute dios. The idea is to pick a country where Ford had assembly plants, research where those plants were and what products were built in those plants and then select an appropriate group of vehicles around the the theme of a specific plant (I find this really fun). I started with an easy one; Ford of Canada. Ford of Canada Tribute by Michael, on Flickr Founded in 1904, this diorama is a tribute to Ford of Canada and focuses on Ford's four principle plants; Windsor (1905-1954), Oakville (1953-to current), Ontario Truck Plant, a.k.a. OTP (1965-2004), and St Thomas (1967-2011). Ford of Canada Tribute by Michael, on Flickr Ford of Canada was born in Windsor, Ontario, across the river from Detroit. Vehicle production ended in 1954, but an engine plant continued for several more decades. Ford of Canada Tribute by Michael, on Flickr Ford of Canada moved auto and truck production from Windsor to Oakville (nearer to Toronto) in 1953. Originally the plant built a wide range of Ford and Mercury vehicles for the domestic market as well as for Ford of Canada's export territories (most of which were RHD countries). After the 1965 US-Canada Auto Pact, Oakville began exporting to the US. Eventually Oakville became a global single source plant for specific vehicles. Current that vehicle is the Ford Edge and Lincoln MK X. Ford of Canada Tribute by Michael, on Flickr The Ontario Truck Plant (OTP) built F-Series trucks from 1965 (MY 1966) to 2004. The plant is located adjacent to the older Oakville plat and Ford of Canada corporate HQ in Oakville, ON. The plant has now been integrated into in to the Oakville facility. Ford of Canada Tribute by Michael, on Flickr The St Thomas plant (near Southwold, ON) started by building cars for the US and Canadian markets. In the 1980s St Thomas became the sole source plant for the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. Lincoln Town Car production was moved from Wixom, MI to St Thomas in 2007. When "Panther" platform car production ended in 2011, Ford shut the plant down.

Ford Motor Company A/S (Denmark) Tribute by Michael, on Flickr I've been deep in the weeds of reading the histories of obscure European Ford subsidiaries. I'm kind of fascinated by the challenge of figuring out the product mix at various assembly plants. Here is a quick and easy tribute the Ford of Denmark's (Ford Motor Company A/S) Sydhavnen, Copenhagen, plant that built Ford cars and trucks from 1924 to 1966. In '66 it was converted to a Ford Tractor plant and from there the trail goes cold. The plant was eventually sold and was demolished in the mid-2000s. Really interesting dioramas, again! It’s very nice to see that you’ve included a tribute to Uwe Bahnsen. He interviewed me and eventually offered me a job as a designer at Ford Werke AG. I had just arrived at the Cologne studios, in early 1986, when he retired. I often wonder if I was the last designer he ever hired!

A new (or refined) concept I started working on the other night. I call it the Five Ford Tribute series and the idea is to pick five models to create a representative sample of the products that rolled off any given Ford assembly line. I created six in one night and am looking forward to creating many more. Excellent tribute photos!
I'm shocked to see how big that new Ford GT looks next to its Wixom plant siblings! 😳
