One of Eleven - No less than eleven Porsche 911's were entered at Le Mans in 1970, all entered by privateers contesting the GT2500 class. Not surprisingly, one would win the class, but the only 911 to be classified as a finisher. Due to the heavy rain at Le Mans that year, eight of the the other ten cars failed to cover the minimum required distance to be classified. This car, like most of the 911s was entered by a gentleman racer in an era when running a car like the 911S at Le Mans was attainable to many with only modestly deep pockets. My recent decision to complete the 1970 Le Mans grid has been aided by both Spark and in this case, DSN43/Trofeu, who have been releasing 911s from that race. I intend to modify two or three using after market decals, lights, hood straps, etc., but this one was made easy for me. 1969 Porsche 911S - Le Mans, 1970 - DSN43/TrofeuJacques ‘Jacky’ Dechaumel was a three-time entrant at Le Mans in 1969 (14th) and in this car in 1970 and again in 1971 (DNF). In 1970 he paired with fellow Frenchman Jean-Claude Parot for the 24 Hours. They started 47th on the grid and would finish the race in an unclassified 13th place. Heavy rains severely impacted the Porsche’s ability to race at speed and they would finish 72 laps down to the winners, failing to cover the required distance for their class. The 911 of Dechaumel was a 1969 S model, with a 2.0L flat-six-cylinder engine. In 1971, he would raise the engine size to 2.2L. Dechaumel was like many of the gentlemen Porsche 911S entrants at Le Mans in 1970. He had an active racing career driving Porsches from 1967-1972, having raced at Spa along with his three Le Mans starts. Parot had a career like Dechaumel, racing mostly in French events from 1966-1971 and mainly behind the wheel of a Porsche. His career included two Le Mans starts, and races at the Nuremburgring, Tour de France and Paris 1000 Km. This is the second DSN43 911S that I have acquired and I am very impressed with the finish and detail of these models. I have a Spark version of another 911 coming so I can make a direct comparison, but I feel these models would be very hard to beat when compared to another production based model. Perhaps 3D resin printing will yield the best results in the future?

That looks great! Nothing as stock as that 911 has been entered in years, maybe even decades...

I will be keeping a keen interest in your quest to complete the 1979 LM grid Jerry. This is a smart addition to that task.

The LM70 full grid was on my radar some years ago so fully support your efforts Jerry. My effort has over the years been a very diluted affair and I doubt due to other interests not happened now. Great to see the elusive 911's come to fruition. Will watch with great interest.

I have seen that DSN/Trofeu are releasing these LM 911's and wondered if you would buy the 1970 versions. And you have. I like their models and have quite a number of BMW, Capri, Cortina, Escort etc. I haven't got any of their new 3D models as yet though. Nice 911, even wearing its Paris registration which is a nice touch.

I'm enjoying your new 1970 inspired collecting focus Jerry. With Trofeu/DSN producing the 911's, it seems like you picked the perfect time to start this project.

I have two more on their way and two on the bench with decals and pieces to make another two of the eleven 911's that ran at Le Mans in 1970, leaving half still to go. I agree with you Tom, something was lost when "production" cars like the 911 stopped running. However, as the prototypes became increasingly faster, the speed differential became too much to have slower cars like these in the race. Never mind the costs, etc. I guess its why I enjoy this era most, a combination of machinery with one goal in mind, to finish the 24 hours.

Ferrari's Come Back - I doubt any reading this do not already know that Ferrari won Le Mans in 2023 on the 100th Anniversary of the first running of the 24 hour race in 1923. so it needs little introduction. Kudos to Looksmart (and others) for getting their version of the 2023 race winner out a couple months before the 2024 race, perhaps one of the most anticipated models of the year. My Le Mans Winners collection (1923-2023) is now complete and the addition of this model from the beginning of the Hypercar era provides a winning car from each era of technological advancement at Le Mans (another section idea!). I for one was very happy to see Ferrari win in 2023 and am very happy with this addition. FERRARI 499P - 2023 Le Mans WINNER - LOOKSMARTFerrari through AF Corse entered two new 499P’s in the Hypercar class at Le Mans in 2023. The cars maiden race at Sebring had produced satisfactory results, with the #50 Ferrari claiming pole, this car close behind, so they were fast, but were they reliable? Brit James Calado, along with Italians Antonio Giovinazzi and Alesandro Pier Guidi teamed up to drive this car at Le Mans. The 499P powered by a 3.0L Turbo V6 (671 BHP) and a 900V battery powered electric motor (268 BHP) on the front axle provided the punch that gave Ferrari its first Le Mans win in 50 years. The Centenary version of Le Mans in 2023 started out partially wet, with the #50 Ferrari leading early on. They fought a close battle with the Toyota team, out to win their sixth consecutive Le Mans. A late evening accident took out the leading Toyota and a lengthy pit stop dropped the sister Ferrari from the race lead. This left the second Toyota and the #51 Ferrari to battle each other for the race lead. The swapped the lead through the early morning until the early afternoon when this car took the lead for the final 55 laps, winning by just over a minute. It was Ferrari’s 10th Le Mans win and first since 1965. The first Ferrari to win Le Mans in 1949 with the 2023 Winner (I need to photo all 10 Ferrari winners!)

Fantastic model, not a real fan of the 1:1's shape but they did deserve the win.
Congrats on your 100 years of winners!
