That's what it must’ve looked like when new! I'd suggest not making the Esso sign's colours too vibrant, they look fantastic now. Just like they’re a little faded over the years. I need to get more blue into the " Extra" but certainly understand where you are coming from Tom.

The storms are queuing up to hit the UK at present. Welcome storm Jocelyn, not as violent as Isha but still not pleasant enough to spend too long a walk outside. So with hatches battened down once again I have been concentrating on the paddock facade with completed door numbers and various posters/advertising, all draft and yet to be confirmed. The door numbers are fixed. I decided not to apply as decals. Thinking of practicalities in period I would not be surprised if each number was placed on a thin piece of timber and nailed/screwed into position. If I had used a decal they would be too flat and not stand off the surface of the door to give the impression as I have mentioned. Well that's my take on it anyway, could well be wrong. To late now though. The rest is all down to my artistic licence. Not finalised but I need to size and position before I print off on decal paper which I hope will be tomorrow. I have weathered the surface of the facade to remove that "new look". This picture does not pick it out as well as I hoped but quite please with my first attempt. It took me some time to eventually find the Grand Prix poster of this race. The red square is "Royal Automobile Club of Belgique" just to add a sense of realism.

Great idea! I guess you could've precision-drilled the vertical posts and fed the wire through but that would have taken some doing... this is much easier to get right.
Have fun in Paris!

It worked well Tom. You just have to have faith to ensure the glue is strong enough once dry that it will not come unstuck when removing the blue tac carefully. Paris was good but getting there and back was a pain due to the farmers blockade. Enjoy Paris, you lucky you! I certainly did, hope you enjoyed the pics Julio.

The main build is now complete but before I present the pics a brief explanatory piece on finishing the roof and the banner decals. From the main period reference pic I could make out on the roof just below the Esso Extra sign a "kick plate" barrier arrangement at foot level. My effort in creating this consisted firstly of a template to ensure my idea and display would fit and work out correctly, which thankfully it did. It was then a question of blue-tacing loosely into position the horizontal kick plate onto my template then fixing the small vertical support pieces into place, making effectively a sub-assembly. Once dry, it was painted and placed into position. Template Template in position waiting for glue to dry. Completed kick plate on the roof Next came the ESSO EXTRA sign and final Defense de Fume banner decal. With the help of Jerry I have discovered creating my own decals and first produced this..... The idea was to try and get a look of sag into the banner. Very difficult to achieve with something so small and light. However, a close friend of mine found the actual in period banner photograph, made a good res pics of it and sent it over to me. so it was back to the drawing broad. The one I was using was the closest I could find on the www and I knew not correct. Experimenting with the correct banner.... And completion..... Bit of artistic licence. Purchased this to add. I have ordered a purpose built Perspex cover which will not arrive until April so until then I need to paint a number of figures, accessories such as tyres, wheels, oil cans and tool boxes to bring it all to life. I very much doubt I will build a diorama as big as this one again. It has been very consuming but enjoyable all the same. I'm glad the main build is complete as I have a number of picture framing projects waiting in the wings. My work bench has doubled up as a diorama/framing bench, which thankfully is now clear.

What an amazing build! Love the realism of the no smoking banner, very nicely done. You can look at the result with pride.
The 2CV van is superb too.

Congratulations Paul. That's a fantastic build that is worthy of a place in a museum and I can't wait to see it complete with figures, tools etc. Very inspirational and something I will aspire to matching one day.

Starting to go in the right direction I think. The 2CV van was a spur of the moment thing. Congratulations Paul. You are very kind Ian. Like I have said previously, this retirement lark has unearthed some surprising abilities never discovered. All depends on good health though, especially the eye sight and dexterity. Fingers crossed so far.

This diorama was intended as a 2023/24 winter project. It is now fast approaching mid-March, day light hours are improving as is the weather and temperature so my days indoors creating are becoming less. However, I have managed to paint up a couple of mechanics when the rains have been persistent the results of which are below. I have also been searching the www for more accessories such as oil cans, tools, spare wheels and the like. More will follow but I fear not until next winter now. That said only this morning there has been a very interesting development. A close friend of mind asked "had I seen this angle"? Well, no actually. For your curiosity see the last pic in this post. This puts a complete new perspective on the potential end result in terms of figures, even potential for other models. Due to lack of available space I don't think I can get in another transporter though. For those who are better "car spotters" than me. What is the red car behind the Wheatcroft transporter, possibly a Mustang? Also, another friend thinks the rear end of the red car behind the Team Lotus transporter might be an Opel of some description. Any confirmation would be much appreciated. At my next swap meet I'll need to find some Ford Capri's. And lastly, the new development pic.....

That image was on another forum relating to transporters (worth a look if you like them) forums.autosport.com/topic/63980-transporters/page-77. I thought you had already posted it. Yes, definitely a Mustang behind the Wheatcroft transporter, not sure about the red car passing behind the Lotus rig. Let me know if you need any help finding accessories.
