Both are great. The Golf looks spot on, but having a penchant for old French cars, he R5 has to be the pick for me.

Thanks gents, 1:24 seems to offer some great castings recently, if it wasn't for my lack of space... This one I couldn’t resist though. It wasn’t a gift, it wasn’t a mix-up. Purely deliberate. And if you've seen my 1:43 collection it shouldn't come as a surprise. Lovely model, now in a display together with a 1:18 and 1:12. The small sidelights identify it as a 1956-1962 948cc version Hachette - Morris Minor Traveller

Thanks gents, I'm very fond of the Minor and I love that model. You never forget your first car, whatever mundane machine it was. Opel was the best-selling make in The Netherlands for decades and their first front-drive Kadett (known as Vauxhall Astra in the UK) sold in the hundreds of thousands. I thought that made it a good proposition for a first car, because it would be easy to find spares and they wouldn’t be expensive. That assumption turned out to be correct and the Kadett in question wasn’t a boring base model either, but a black 1.6 SR with factory sunroof, alloys and Recaro bucket seats. I drove it for years and when the time came to say goodbye I didn’t like to let it go. Since then I have amassed quite a few scale Kadetts, from the Gama of the ‘80s to a Minichamps, a Schuco and several PW cars. I recently visited a friend who’s a proper Opel fan and model collector and we discussed classic Opels. When I left, he gave me two models from his trading stock. They’re models in 1:24 scale of both Opel cars that I have owned and enjoyed, and this brown metallic was a very popular colour on early cars. Alas I didn’t have a triangle screwdriver with me when I photographed it, so no way to take off the rubber band that holds the doors shut. I also should've straightened the rear tyre before and not after photography Hachette - Opel Kadett D 1.3 1979

Nice model! Those Opels were good looking cars!
There seems to be a lot of interesting looking 1:24s selling for very reasonable prices! That’s a scale that deserved to be far more popular!

Very period colour. My Grandfather had one in a slightly darker shade back in the day here when German vehicles were still a left field choice here

Very nice model of both the Minor Traveller and the Kadett. My late friend had a black Mk1 Astra GTE years ago which I liked and that car influenced his younger son to get into the Vauxhall/Opel scene here. He had a modified Mk1 Astra with a turbo engine that he sold for good money, he still has some others stashed in a barn including a very rare Kadett convertible which I think was done in your country Tom? That said apparently my Impala is an influence as well so a couple of years ago he finally managed to buy his first American car, a 1963 Belair sedan lowrider which has won quite a number of awards and been used in a couple of music videos, not that I can recall the artists.

They were very good-looking well-proportioned cars indeed Julio, bang up to date in 1979. If I didn't do 1:43, it would be 1:24 because of all those nice models. I looked at the retailers and these go for Ixo 1:43 money. That's great value! They do take up space though. Very period colour. My Grandfather had one in a slightly darker shade back in the day here when German vehicles were still a left field choice here I've seen a few when we were holidaying in the UK but I never understood the logic of selling two virtually identical ranges alongside each other, Andy. Then again, it was even worse in the BMC days... Very nice model of both the Minor Traveller and the Kadett. Which generation of the Kadett, Paul? The third had a semi-convertible (targa) done by Baur in Germany, the fourth could be converted using a kit by Bieber and the fifth had a proper factory-sanctioned Bertone convertible.

I had no less than two 1:1 Corsas, both were gifts when their owners acquired new cars. The first was a 1987 1.2S that had originally been painted metallic blue but served as a loaner for a garage and for added attention value it was painted yellow. That car had been standing for a while and needed some work. I did some of it but lacked the time and room to work on it, so after a while I passed it on to a guy who was a mechanic. He enjoyed it for years. My second was a white 1.4i from 1990, which I ran for a few months as a daily driver. Eventually the safety inspection ran out and it needed more welding than I felt capable of, so it too was passed on. The model reminds me of why I like the Corsa A (known as Vauxhall Nova in the UK) so much. It’s a simple design with good proportions and those bulging wheelarches give it some cred. The lukewarm SR was the model I aspired to own, but there were never enough around and nowadays they’re expensive Hachette - Opel Corsa 1.3 SR 1983

Europe got all of the good ones from GM and Ford, especially between the 1980s and 1990s

Nice model of that Corsa! That car brings lots of memories! My friend and fellow car designer, Carlos Barba, with whom I attended classes at Art Center, went to work for Opel when he graduated, a couple of months before I went to Ford. When I arrived in Germany in early 1986 he picked me up at the Frankfurt airport in his brand new, all black Corsa SR and, the next day we drove to Cologne in that car! I wonder if that’s available in 1:43…

My friend I think has a Nova tucked away in his stash of cars, he is the one that has the convertible Kadett. I shall have to ask him type it is. He also had a white Nova that he crashed into a ditch years ago when he was coming home from a concert, he was really too tired to be driving.

I wonder if that’s available in 1:43… Unless you want an '80s Gama (which is actually quite good) there is weirdly no 1:43 Corsa SR, Julio. I wonder why, as there are several base-model Corsas. They were nice cars, but I wouldn't want to be in one in an accident...
