By early 1970's french manufacturer Safir had a small but interesting range (Super Champion) of 1/43 prototypes, that included Porsche 917 K and LH, Lola T-70 and Ferrari 512 M. The cars had interesting shapes (for those times standards) and poor details. Wheels tried to recreate the real wheels of the cars, and some different models were presented to recreate real racing versions. Bodies were in plastic, which was good to work, if we wanted to put our hands on them. Some 30 years ago I made a poor and undemanding attempt to reproduce this fantastic car (2). Original front of the model (1) didn't looked like anything of the known universe, so by that time I already had some work to approach the proper front shape of the car. Last year I decided that this was a waist, and put my hands on it again. Plastic body didn't allow the use of agressive products to remove old paint, and it had to be hand-polished (3). So it started to look more like a 917 LH (4). Paint and decals weren't difficult, but headlight covers and windows were... Finally, it's not perfect, but doesn't embarace me. So here's the one that was the fastest racing car for many years.

The details may seem basic by today's standards, but I think they were on a par, if not above the equivalent products from Solido at the time. Perhaps being plastic rather than diecast allowed them to include a bit more detail. You've done a great job on your upgrade...do you plan more?

I also have a pair of Lolas T70 from this Super-Champion range. I made a version of the 1969 Daytona winner, but I'm reluctant to show it... the decals didn't work out well. The other is in the garage, waiting for me to turn it into the 1967 Le Mans version.

Great job on the 917, one of my favourite race cars ever. I can remember these models being sold in some shops here in England so I used to buy as many as possible as they were quite cheap. I just bought another Lola T70 to add to the collection.
