1980s Rally - Group B – Audi Quattro
So, a selection of Audi Quattros in its three shapes from 1981 to 1986
Audi 1
1980 RAC Rally 1st overall Hannu Mikkola & Arne Hertz
Trofeu diecast
The first win on the RAC Rally by a 4WD car, no 2WD drive car would win the RAC Rally again
Audi 2
1981 Tour de Corse retired Michelle Mouton & Fabrizia Pons
Minichamps diecast – the Quattros just look brilliant in low tarmac settings and fat slick tyres and then of course there was Michelle Mouton who came so close to winning the World Championship. Michelle is now a safety delegate on the WRC
Audi 3
1982 Manx Rally retired Hannu Mikkola & Arne Hertz
My conversion on a Trofeu diecast
Audi 4
1983 Ypres 24hrs Rally 4th overall Marc Duez & Willy Lux
Rallying4Belgium Trofeu diecast
Audi 5
1983 RAC Rally retired Darryl Weidner & Rob Arthur
Trofeu resin
Audi 6
1984 Monte Carlo Rally 1st overall Walter Rohrl & Christian Geistdorfer
Trofeu diecast – the only time a Quattro won the Monte Carlo Rally
Audi 7
1984 RAC Rally 1st overall Stig Blomquist & Bjorn Cederberg
Trofeu diecast and a conversion by me using a Trofeu diecast.
A lockdown project to show the car as I saw it, part way through the rally with the damaged rear wing
Audi 8
1986 RAC Rally 18th overall Chris Lord & Ron Varley
PJ Model Trofeu diecast limited edition
Audi 16
1986 Hong Kong Beijing Rally 1st overall Stig Blomquist Bruno Berglund
Trofeu resin
Audi 9
1987 National Breakdown Rally 8th overall John Bosch & Guy Hodgson
Scala 43 / Trofeu diecast
Sports Quattro
Audi 10
1986 National Breakdown Rally 1st overall Hannu Mikkola & Arne Hertz
Trofeu resin
Audi 11
1984 Ulster Rally 1st overall Walter Rohrl & Christian Geistdorfer
GB Models limited edition using a Minichamps diecast (but just about to come out from Trofeu)
Audi 12
1985 Manx Rally retired Malcolm Wilson & Nigel Harris
ROC Models limited edition using a Minichamps diecast
S1 Quattro – now this was a brutal car. What a shape, what a noise. If you have never seen one of these in action, just check out any film from the 1985 1000 Lakes Rally
Audi 13
1986 Monte Carlo Rally 4th overall Walter Rohrl & Christian Geistdorfer
Spark model
Audi 14
1985 Ulster Rally retired Michelle Mouton & Fabrizia Pons
My conversion using a Partwork diecast
Audi 15
1986 Manx Rally retired Michelle Mouton & Fabrizia Pons
A conversion using a Starter resin kit
This car was so low they couldn’t get it up the ramp into scrutineering, so it was scrutineered outside in the car park. It really was a difficult car for anyone to control on the tight bumpy Manx lanes. Michelle eventually crashed out, not far from where we were spectating. The following helicopter also had a very heavy landing as they came down to check up on t6he crew.
I perhaps should have started with the Audi Quattro, as Audi were first to arrive in the Group B era in the early 1980s. Having trialed a 4wd system in a VW Itis it was realised that this system could be transferred into a road car and made to work and so the Audi Quattro was born. Once the drivers got used to throwing the car around it was anything but boring to watch. I remember on a Welsh Rally Malcolm Wilson in a Quattro on the military roads of the Epynt ranges, in the distance you could hear the car going flat out, just bouncing off the rev limiter. In the early 1980s it was a sensational car to see on the road and hear on the rally stages of the world. We all wondered why Hannu Mikkola was jumping from the winning Ford Escort to this untried Audi Quattro. We soon found out. It was the end of 2WD cars on the World Rally Championship and changed the shape of rallying for ever.
