1980s Rally – Group B – Lancia
The only front-line manufacturer to have two completely different cars in the Group B era, the great looking 2-wheel drive Lancia 037 and the brutal 4-wheel drive Lancia Delta S4 – the beauty and the beast. Lancia developed their Beta Monte Carlo into a potent rally car only to be replaced in 1985 by the incredible supercharged and turbocharged Delta S4. Both cars had a very distinctive engine sound. Lancia were a top team in the 1980s but the only time British supporters ever saw these cars would be on the annual RAC Rally. I can think of only two occasions that the Lancia 037 appeared away from the RAC and that was on the 1982 Pace National and 1983 Circuit of Ireland. There were two versions of the 037 the E1 distinguished from the outside by the rear bodywork finishing behind the rear wheels and the E2 finishing above the rear wheels.

A conversion by me using a Partwork diecast. Back in the mid 90s I was lucky enough to sit in this car at Ignacio’s private museum, in Spain. We were told it was an ex-works car, it actually transpired that it was a road car not supported by the factory. In recent years this car came to the UK painted in Martini colours!!! There are plenty of photos on the web of the car on the 86 MCR.
