Several years ago I purchased a Kenwood KX-1030 cassette deck (sight unseen) to add to my system. It was the second one that I had purchased. The first was a no go. I had one of these in my youth and for a long time I wanted to acquire another one. Cassette decks are tricky vintage purchases because it is pretty much a crap-shoot as to weather you will find one that can be restored. There are some irreplaceable parts on these old decks (heads) but the motors, belts, capstan tires and capacitors can still be found.
I hit the jackpot on the second try. I replaced the belt, drive tires and motor and she sings like a bird. Speed is spot-on. Dolby and bias work like a charm and there are no leaking capacitors. Rewind is a little jinky but I've ordered the parts to fix that.
To make a long story short, I've got a deck that performs like new. I'm using it with vintage Kenwood Microphones to record the Victrola that I restored a few years ago.

I think at one time I had a Kenwood cassette deck, but not as fancy as the one you have.

I used to fiddle with old stereo equipment years ago, tended to avoid cassette decks as the belts were hard to source and a pain to replace. Still have my own '90s Sony set but I haven't used the cassette deck in years. I guess the belts are gone now.

Cool! I was a big Kenwood fan and the cassette deck and amplifier that I bought when I moved to (West) Germany in 1986 were both Kenwood. Along with those I bought a beautiful, piano black, Sansui turntable which I brought to Mexico with me and still use to this day!  |

You will get a laugh out of this. This is a Realistic quadraphonic receiver made by Marantz I've had for fifty years. It resides in a closet, but still works and still has good enough quality sound for our back patio. One side of the tuner dial is now burned out. Maybe someday we'll replace it, but for now...  |

I never used cassette decks at home much, but they were indispensable for long drives in the car. Are you now scouring thrift shops for cassettes, or do you still have your collection from back in the day?

That's some cool stuff. I still have my Sony Reel to Reel deck, a Sony preamp, an old turntable (this will soon be replaced by Fluance RT85) and of course a tape deck and a tuner that I bought new in the '80s. I also have a pair of Bose 501s purchased new in the '90s that I don't use anymore but I still keep them in the living room as end tables.
