Auto Pilen and Joal were two spanish toy manufacturers with interesting activity in late 1960's and 1970's. Auto Pilen ended by early 1990's, and Joal lasted longer, until 2016. For 1/43 models they both used molds and bases under license from Mercury, Politoys, Dinky, Corgi, etc. A similar deal to the one between Seat and Fiat for 1:1 scale cars... This models were attractive to us portuguese kids, they were almost as good as the originals, and cheaper than Solidos, Corgis or Dinkys. By that time spanish currency were slightly weaker than portuguese, and we could by some in a row if we went to any spanish city. Some of this spanish models remained from my childhood, and I believe this Sting Ray is Corgi-based (1). Some body work was necessary, since this base is the first C2, with split rear window (2). Manufacturer done fake opening doors within real door's profiles. Big exhausts were made from plastic kit's skeletons (3). Interior is basic but ok, with proper and very typical Corvette dashboard (4). The C2 Sting Ray is my favourite of all Corvettes. Many years ago I tried to do the 1967 Le Mans version, with a poor result. So this time I forgot about racing and went for the very interesting 1966 Coupe 427 (5 - 11).

That was a nice conversion job, huge improvement! It may have been Corgi mould they used as a master. I liked the 64-65 cars with the end of fuel injection and the start of disc brakes. Well done!

Thank you gentlemen, I feel that both the model and my work are far from perfect, but there's still Corvette enough in both to make this interesting...
