Excalibur Auctions is excited to present the largest collection of individual automobiles in 1:43 scale that charts the history of motor cars and motor racing around the world. The private collection titled The Old Garage Model Automobile Collection (TOGMAC) comprises over 6,500 cars and more than 600 different makes of car. It has been amassed over 50 years and painstakingly documented and photographed as a virtual museum online at www.togmac.com by a passionate private collector. The collection features rare and unusual examples, alongside more well-known models and offers collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to obtain a unique piece of motoring history. Speaking about the collection Jonathan Torode of Excalibur Auctions said: "We are so proud to have been appointed to sell this complete original collection of automobiles for auction. It literally charts the history of the genre, not just in the UK but around the globe and has some spectacular rare and little-known models from both mainstream and artisan manufacturers that will be highly sought-after by collectors far and wide." Speaking about his collection, the private collector tells us: "Automotive design has always interested me, from the 1950's onwards, and as a graphic design student in London, I wrote my final year's thesis on car design. I am not a technical person "my interest is in the overall external look of a car, plus the history of the companies worldwide who have manufactured the vehicles.

I looked at this the other day. I could never figure out if they are selling in lots, or as one collection.

Hard to say Jerry, but if you look at their current auction of Trainers, they are selling them individually. That said, there are a lot of cheaper models here that wouldn't be worth selling individually and are probably better of grouped into small lots of 3 or 4 like Vectis do.
Given the auction is less than a month away, I'm surprised there aren't more details available.

I registered an interest in the auction and they duly notified me when they had the lots prepared in an online catalogue. So today I did indeed watch the auction and won some lots, er eighteen, ouch. Although I had registered, added a payment card etc I didn't realise that in order to bid one had to sign in on a pop up and naturally I had forgotten my password, doh! Thus I missed the first few lots which were Matrix models some of which were bargains, damn. I believe that we have members in Romania, there was at least one Romanian bidder and I wonder if it is one of our friends on here?

I didn't follow this first auction as I was expecting prices to go a lot higher, and that the 27% buyers commission plus postage would make prices unattractive. Obviously I was wrong. I suspect many people were turned off by the high commission like I was, and hence the lack of competitive bidding.
I feel sorry for the seller, who's taken a huge loss on his collection.
I'll definitely follow the next auction in January more closely.

There were bidders from overseas, Sweden/Austria/Hong Kong/Ireland/Romania/Turkey and even one from Uzbekistan who won a couple of lots. The 27% commission also includes our government VAT at about 5% but one does have to remember that when bidding as it's all too easy to get auction fever! I think that the very well known Vectis Auctions commission is 25%. For you obviously postage would be expensive plus I guess there might be import duty on top? That said there were some stupendous bargains with very few unsold lots, who can resist an Autocult model for 25 pounds? Or Matrix in the same range. Some lots did go well especially in the Land Speed Record section. But as said the seller lost a lot of what he must have paid for most of the models but that does seem to be the case with a lot of hand built stuff in general, I bought three Matrix models for the price of one from a Vectis auction, did the same with another lot but cannot remember who the maker was.
January is I think British and other European cars so there could be some good stuff. Not that I'll be bidding, well I might :-)

Did anyone pick up anything from the 2nd Excalibur auction yesterday. I tuned in for some of the auctions, but I don't think there were as many bargains as the first auction and they learnt their lesson and set higher starting prices. In the end I won one auction just to test out their service.

In the end I won one auction just to test out their service. Well so far my 'experiment' has proved to be a bit of a disaster. As some of you will know, last week the Royal Mail was the victim of a cycber attack, so all international shipments have been suspended. As a result, Excalibur have advised my shipping options for two Spark models to Australia are £70 with Parcelforce or £138 with FedEx - neither of which are very attractive for £55 worth of models.

Are they not willing to sit on shipping till the mail issue gets sorted Ian?

Thanks Jerry, yes, after a few emails they’ve agreed to hold the shipment until the Royal Mail gets back to normal, whenever that might be.

Sorry to hear of the problems regarding getting your parcel sent, Royal Mail are having a bit of a bad time of late with workers going on strike (although no dates have been set for anymore) and the cyber attack. I did pick up some lots, ten in all, bid on a few more but I didn't want to go mad. Not so many bargains as you say and I think that the male auctioneer does tend to waffle on a bit whilst his wife is all business. I hope that I didn't bid against you Ian! My lots are 30/35/118/321/332/339/344/375/395/414. Next and final auction is in March, my bank balance will be relieved when the third part is finished.

No worries Paul, glad you found some bargains. I think you definitely have an advantage being local without the shipping cost or hassles.
