After the Jim Hurtubise car...
... I swore I was done with these.
But when decals became available for the 1964 Indy Winner (the last win for a front-engine car) I had to take a shot at it. The mods are not as extensive as the Herk car but the nose scoop was a huge PITA and the paint/graphics are as well. Creating the templates for masking the nose has been quite a chore. I've got it close now. Wish me luck.

I wish you luck! I do love the front engine Indy cars, I have some (but not enough) in my collection of US race cars. Am I correct in thinking that Jim Hurtubise drove roadsters long after everyone else had switched to rear engine cars?

This one fought me all the way. It took several tries to get the nose right. The two-input recessed scoop was a real bear. On top of that the first go at masking and painting the nose didn't work and removing the paint also removed the putty I used to blend in the scoop. There are also some pinstripes on the nose (between the red and white) that are about as thin as a pencil line. This is not a job that I would recommend for one who is easily frustrated. I'm happy with the end result though.
1964 A.J. Foyt Sheraton Thompson Special (the last roadster to win the 500).

You could make me a racing car fan with your conversions! I still cannot believe how you are making all those decals...? Even if they are ready-made, how do you apply all those lines and decors around the nose? These gems are second-to-none, congrats!

Thanks guys. The decals are from IndyCals. They do a fantastic job and will even customize a bit if need be. They don't just do Indy cars. I get a lot of GT40 decals from them as well.
The trick is in the trim work. A very sharp hobby knife, lots of magnification and a glass of nice claret works for me. This set of decals came with a masking template but it did not include the nose. I scanned the decals and then used GIMP to manipulate them into the proper position. I printed them to a sheet of Tamyia masking paper and used that for the painting of the nose. It was print, manipulate, test, repeat until I got it right.
JB, those pinstripes on the nose were just...let's just say one must find one's zen to apply them.
I used two doner cars to build this one and it took over a year to finish it because I'd do a bit then move on to something else, then do a bit more.
But I've got it now, and that makes me the winner.
