Here in Portugal there was an interesting tradition of simple plastic toys that we could buy in city or country fairs, along with clothes, kitchen tools, food, whatever. Today, these toys are wanted by collectors, as well as older ones, made of wood. During 1950´s and 1960´s some industrial plastic manufacturers expanded their range to toys, making cars, military vehicles, airplanes, etc. This 300 SL comes from an almost forgotten factory called Plasticos Radar. I kept this toy just because I didn't throw it away. To know if they used some foreign diecast as mould would require a deeper reasearch, beyond Google info... Recently. I compared it with images of the real car, and it looked surprisingly workable, with dimensions and details that could point out to a transformation. The 300 SL is not one of my favourites, but still is a very important and relevant classic car, so I gave it a go. It took almost 3 months, not because of this being a very difficult job, but because it involved a considerable number of tasks. By the way, almost every task I like to perform in this 1-43 hobby. Interior was made with another model´s dashboard and spare pieces of plastic. Tiny photo-etched Mercedes bagdes and seats were bought online, and wheels were adapted from another PW Mercedes 190. Original bumpers and wheels were useless, as well as the windows. New windows came out well. 1- Original toy 2- Bodywork 3- New interior 4- This work required written planning and colour tests... ended up choosing a not so usual colour for this car. 5-11 Final result 12- Red interior is quite appealing 13, 14- Today a 300 SL may reach 1,5 Million USD, or 6/7 Million if is a rare alloy bodied.

All skillful work, but that last plastic spoon colour sampler is just a brilliant finish, pardon the pun....

Fantastic job, unrecognisable as the toy it was.
