I wanted to give you all a heads up about a particularly nasty spear phishing attempt that has been going around the Interwebs of late. It is an old one with a new twist.
It involves email address spoofing and either a link to a securedoc.html or PDF file. The messages appear to come from reputable law firms, charities or local government agencies. The header/subject will typically include "2023 Urgent Review".
The email will include the real contact info of the person at the firm/company that has been compromised and whose email domain is being used. If you get one of these emails do not click on any of the links. Delete the email. You may want to jot down the phone number of the individual who has been compromised and let them know.
It is also possible to create sieve filters that will reject these phishing attempts and to block the domains in the links using a hosts file. If you are interested in this information, let me know.
I suspect that there is somebody, somewhere who has analyzed the headers on these emails and is doing their best to bring the f*ckers down.
One can only hope.
