Just printed (mostly successfully) my first lot of home made decals for the wing on this McLaren F1. I had been sent a damaged Hachette McLaren ('95 LM winner) effectively for free but already have this model so found a Minichamps Harrods F1 on eBay, missing the rear wing going for £10. Swapped the wing over and repainted, modifying a little to get the right shape as the '95 and '96 wings are different. Also picked up a batch of battered old Starter/Records kits for cheap, one of which was a mostly intact Dunlop 962. The decals worked relatively well on the McLaren above but the decal I printed for the rear wing on the 962 was almost invisible when I applied it so I'm guessing I'll need to print it on white decal paper instead and print it on a red rectangle to bring out the yellow parts. Has anyone got any suggestions as to the best producer of decal paper - this stuff is just from Amazon and seems to work well enough for dark decals on a lighter background but I might look to do more of this in the future and I'm sure there's better quality decal paper/card out there.

I've used Tamiya paper with good results. Nice conversion, BTW.

Thanks Alex - do you have a link to this as searching Tamiya Decal Paper on Google didn't bring up any results.

I use Hayes Paper purchased through Amazon as well as Cannon paper. The Hayes is as good in my opinion and cheaper. The thing I have looked for is thin decal film so that it lays down well. The only draw back is that it's easy to tear if not careful. My experience is that it's not as much the paper as the printer. A good quality laser printer is a must for best quality decals and color vibrancy. My wife has a new printer for printing her photography. It uses pigment ink rather than dye ink like in my current printer and I'm hoping it will produce even better results.

It's Hayes that I got through Amazon also - seems okay. I would say that the printer is not an expensive printer, so may well be part of the problem. Worst case, I can buy a set of decals to finish off the 962 but that does partially defeat the object of a cheap fix up as the decals aren't cheap - that's life I guess but in the meantime, I'll give it a try on white decal paper.

Since the Shell logos occupy the top half of the rear spoiler, printed on white making the spoiler half red half white wouldn't look too bad and few would probably know. I've never had great success printing yellow or gold on dark colors like red with clear decal paper.

I did go with white decal paper in the end and it looks okay - I made the yellow lighter in case it didn't show up so well next to the red but that was probably not the right call. It looks okay though, given that this model was a bit of a rescue job in general. The decal is not fuzzy, the camera focus is just not on the rear wing. The small ERG logo on the front bumper was missing from this Corgi model (along with the wheels needing to be white and one of the lights being the wrong colour) and it came out okay also. This one got a bit banged around in the post. Survived surprisingly well for an old Quartzo model but the one thing I couldn't fix until now was the GB flags against the driver names. These came out really nicely, which I wasn't expecting.

Lastly the windscreen stripe on this one had the logos added. Not the best and one of them got smudged a bit on the way home so I had to try and touch the decal up a bit. It's a 'fake' Ebbro I realised after purchasing, so not hugely bothered. It's good enough to be on the shelf.

Nice job! If I find that Toyota somewhere, it's coming home.

Nicely done. Something I'd like to try one day.
