Having started a new job recently, I thought I swap out my iPhone 12 for a new iPhone 15. I therefore pulled out my new shipment of models to photograph, set up my Milena Rose dioramas and positioned the iPhone 15 in the usual place. This was the result: By comparison, here's a similar model photographed with my old iPhone 12. Unfortunately macro photography does not appear to be a strong point of the new phone .

Maybe stand at some distance from the model and zoom in?

We just had to switch our work phones to iPhones and all I can say is we did not take a step backwards, we fell off a cliff. Hate, hate, hate them.

What's an iPhone? Happy Android user here, sure I'm missing out on 'something' but I guess ignorance is bliss?

Maybe stand at some distance from the model and zoom in? Thanks Tom, I took a second set of pictures with the car moved back 2cm, but frankly it didn’t improve things very much. I’m thinking I’ll have to try something complete different…maybe shot for a more elevated angle and or 3/4 view. I’m also thinking about dispensing with the diorama background in case that’s throwing off the focusing. Whatever, it’s clear I need a new approach with this new camera.

Strange, reports are very positive about the 15's camera.

Was recently at the phone store with one of the kids who is still on our family plan to replace their iPhone. The person helping us saw my old Android phone and tried to tempt me to upgrade to a new iPhone. Their sales pitch, "It takes amazing pictures!". This old analog (a boomer Martin) who only wants a phone user found that incredibly amusing. But then what do I know, I own Jaguars. 😁

I tried taking photos with my phone once but the cord isn't long enough to reach all the way across the room.

It took me a while to get the best out of my phone's camera.
Apparently for the iPhone 15, you tap '0.5x' to enter macro mode even when you're further away from the object. That should ensure that you get a larger depth of field though you're still making macro shots.
For my Samsung A54 it's switching to Pro mode, then moving away from the subject and using the pinch function to zoom in. That switches to the macro lens.

Thanks Tom, been meaning to Google if there was a solution. I’l try that and report back.
Unfortunately since I posted the first pictures, my wife has now covered my usual photography location with Christmas decorations!

Help me out gents? I actually was not deriding the iPhone, well not completely
As a phone, I am 100% happy with my 3 year old cheap Android smart phone and will probably continue to be, however, as a camera it is just 'OK'.
I grappled with the idea of picking up a good older Iphone, just for photos. I would use this for personal and business use. Are there any particular generations of iPhones that would be better than a 3-4 year old non-Samsung Android phone? Say something in the $100 USD range used, but in good order? What are your thoughts?

A used flagship phone would be a nice idea, could be an Android too. Google Pixel are known for their image quality.
