Before I go to the 1965 LeMans winner that I pretend to recreate, an abandoned project:
I had the Stradale version from Politoys, and hoped to upgrade it to get that unique beautiful car. But the truth is that reshaping the front of the car would be a nightmare.
Even worse, get the roof and its pillars with the right angle and inclination would be an impossible task (1).
So I moved to plan B, and I sold this Politoys to a collector, and use the profit to try to buy the fine model from Looksmart like fellow member Reeft1 wisely did not so long ago.
As for the LeMans winner, I bought this model from Mercury a few years ago in a toy fair.
No longer had the original wheels, and I found out that this was an attempt from Mercury to recreate the first 250 LM, presented by Ferrari in late 1963 (2).
It would be boring to describe all the intreventions in this upgrade. I only mention three:
Reshaping the front to get the sharp nose of the LeMans winner;
Tranforming the rear section to heve the air entrys above the wheels and increase the size of that sort of “bridge” above the rear window;
The windshield – it took three attempts to get one, and didnt´t end up perfect... packages from dental floss and dish scrubbers were heplfull!
(3, 4, 5)
It is a very well documented car, that helped to improve the basic interior. And Mercury model provides interesting engine detail... had to keep the poor spare wheel, since its center is part of the rear section fixation (6)
By this time (7) I was getting a serious crush for this red body. I got good home made decals, but white circles and black #21 wont make this model look nicer. And the real car has irritating thin bicycle tires in front...
So my storyteller side created an alternative narrative / fiction to this car:
This is in fact the chassis nº 5893 of the Drogo bodied 250 LM that won the 1965 LeMans race. It went into a 2 year deep restoration in CMMF Classic Garage to bring it to concours condition.
In the next months surgical rumours and vague press notes will be released to make the appetite grow among the very rich american and japanese collectors, investment funds and Jay Leno.
In the meantime, there will be meetings with Sotheby´s and RM Auctions.
By the summer, it will be presented at Monterey auction, where it will sell for a record value of 65 to 70 million USD. ( 8 …16)
