Two more books bought locally (in mid 1979), and a gift… When I made this list of car books, years ago, I classified the following two as books, mainly because they had no ads. 43This guide was particularly attractive and interesting to me because it had lots of excellent drawings and, at around that time, is when I started to seriously consider becoming a car designer. I’ve often wondered why the editors used such awful artwork for the cover having so many great illustrations inside! It’s rather odd, but definitely interesting, to read about the “future” forty years later! 44A gift from a friend who found this interesting guide stored at his parent's house. A cool window to the past! 45I loved this book when I bought it! It was the first of many similar ones that would join my collection of books about American cars!

There was a time when our local remaindered book store would occasionally yield the Consumer Guides and similar for next to no money and I would snap them up on my random visits. Then they suddenly stopped but I still go there more in hope than expectation... Their stock is now very UK publisher orientated. Shame. Chrysler Chronicles, Cars of the Fabulous Fifties, Cars of the Sizzling Sixties etc. plus two other titles. Lettering on the spines is fading now even though they're not kept in direct daylight. Great books which still get referred to.

The yearly car guides ate up a lot of my pocket change for many years, I do still buy them but don't quite enjoy them as much since the do not list option prices anymore. I still have one going back to 1975.

There are many in my collection and they certainly are great, extremely entertaining books! My parents bought these three for me during a trip to Houston, in October of 1979. My father always knew my taste in cars, amazingly well! 46One more book, edited by Automobile Quarterly, that ended up being a bit of a disappointment! It’s filled with many interesting facts and stories, but leaves out entire periods of time that I wanted to read about. It has nice photos but, again, there were many more that I was expecting to see! 47This was my first book from this excellent author, and it was, and remains, delightful, informative and quite interesting! 48This was an totally unexpected and very enjoyable surprise! It was, thanks to this book, that I learned that there were many fascinating MGs, besides the usual sports cars that were generally the ones featured in most of the books that I had seen at that time.

Interesting how many of those books have an illustrated front cover instead of a photograph. Shame that the Cadillac book is incomplete in its history, happened to me a few times and it's a huge disappointment.

Your comment about front covers is quite an interesting one.

'Magic of MG' is still on my shelf from purchase when new. Today I wandered into our local Red Cross Charity Shop and discovered 'Jaguar Scrap Book' published in 2006 and signed by it's author Philip Porter. I expect Jerry will also have this book in his library.
As the Jaguar book is A3 size it's going to be awkward to accommodate, but as I have to read it first I'll have time to work out how to store it. Incidentally the dust wrapper is in good condition which is pleasing. I suspect the age of the book is also another reason why it was modestly priced.
A previous buy in January from the same Red Cross store was 'History of the Earls Court London Motor Show'. As a visitor to every show from 1963 to 1999 this book was a 'No brainer' for me and another absorbing read.
Apols for jumping in on this thread but I'm finding Julio's book adds fascinating.

Nice guy and got the rest of my books of his signed. He owns one of the first E-Types BTW. I too am enjoying Julio's book collection and wouldn't mind the MG book myself.

Julio, Can you recommend a comprehensive book, with colour illustrations, on Rolls Royce models from 1930 to date? My RR collection has expanded from a few models a couple of years ago to over 30. So I'm a looking for a book to add to my Book of RR by Hamlyn.

So I'm a looking for a book to add to my Book of RR by Hamlyn. Hello David, I read your message this morning and have been thinking about it all day long. I really don’t know if there’s a book covering precisely those specific years, let alone in colour. However, if you decide to get well written books with excellent information and good black and white photos about Rolls-Royce, I’d get anything written by Martin Bennett or Lawrence Dalton.

I bought this one at a local drugstore, in November of 1979… 49I’ve never been attracted by the American cars from the 1940s but, I had to have this one since I already had the one from the 1960s. Unfortunately, I never bought the one from the 50s, in order to complete the set. These three were Christmas gifts from an aunt. She asked for hints and I referred her to my favourite local bookstore of those days: Sandi’s! 50As good as the American car series from this publisher, but with the added attraction that this book had photos of a lot of cars I had never ever seen or heard about! This particular one has always been the least enjoyable of this set. 51Same as the one above, except that its content is much more enjoyable! 52Same as the one above! It took me a couple of months to buy the missing title from this British car set, but I did!…
