Thanks to Jeff’s idea and since, like him, at this time I’m not buying as many models as I would like to, I’ll photograph every car book in my collection and tell you the story (if there’s one) behind them. It all began sometime during the mid-70s, when my father started buying me the first fascicles of this fantastic Spanish encyclopedia. At that time I had no idea there were books about cars so, this publication was a great surprise and was incredibly enjoyable. I still enjoy browsing through this publication and I often find excellent photos, good illustrations and a lot of interesting information!

1This was the very first book about cars in my collection. I saw it in a bookstore in Mexico City and being a Rolls-Royce fan I fell in love with it immediately. Christmas was very close and when I was asked what I wanted as a present that year I immediately said I wanted this book. So, my aunt Marcela gave me this wonderful book in December of that year, I was 14 years old.

A Rolls-Royce book was one of my first car books -if not the first- too!

That must be a long treasured heirloom for you Julio. I have a book that was given ti me by my Aunt and Uncle at close to the same age. (12) and now that they are both gone, the book has taken on a new meaning for me.

(12) and now that they are both gone, the book has taken on a new meaning for me. It certainly is, Jeff! Every time I browse through it I remember the moment I saw it in that bookstore, in Mexico City, and how mesmerized I was by all of those old black and white photos of so many beautiful Rolls-Royce cars that I had never heard of before!

During the Summer of 1977 my Father drove to Laredo (Texas) in order to buy and bring home his first PC. Among the things he brought home were the following two books and a Coleman cooler filled with McDonald’s apple pies for my Mother! 2This was my first book from the fabulous Dalton Walton series! I still remember how surprised I was to discover the sheer variety of styles offered by so many coachbuilders on postwar Rolls-Royce cars! This book remains one of my favourite in my collection! 3The typical book about old cars, filled with photos of the usual classics! This book introduced me to many marques that I had never heard about, like Panhard et Levassor, Horch, Lorraine-Dietrich, Stutz, etc.

Love those memories. My favourite books are those with a story, though I have very few of those.

Easy to see where your love of the classics came from.

Love those memories. My favourite books are those with a story, though I have very few of those. Many of my books (and models) have a story! And I love being reminded of those stories when I read my books or look at my models! Easy to see where your love of the classics came from. Yes, I fell in love with classic cars very early in my life, thanks to my first car books and magazines!

During late 1977 I found a local bookstore, called “Sandi Bookstore”, that sold imported magazines and books, including a few about cars! I was really excited about it and used up my savings to buy these: 4This book deals with famous international collections and museums. I was extremely impressed by the cars in both the Harrah’s and Briggs Cunningham collections, and set my mind into getting to visit them sometime! And, fortunately, I did! The Cunningham collection in 1979 (and returned several times) and Harrah’s in 1980. 5This thin book includes lots of nice European and American modern (at that time) collectibles with beautiful colour photographs!

In November of 1977, during a visit to Mexico City (I have lots of relatives there), I bought these two books: 6Boy, was I fascinated by the photography in this book, edited by Automobile Quarterly! I had read about AQ in one of the first fascicles of the Spanish encyclopedia that I’ve mentioned before, but I wasn’t prepared for such a magnificent display of quality and detail! It prompted me to find how to subscribe to that magazine, ASAP!!! 7One more book packed with photos and an overview of the automobile and its influence in 20th Century life. I was slowly getting familiar with marques that I had never heard of before and was enjoying it tremendously! However, one photo that I’ll never forget was a big, two page colour photo spread, of a black R-type Continental. It was love at first sight! And, back in Guadalajara, at Sandi Bookstore, I found this tiny book. I bought it along with my first issue of a magazine about old cars: “Car Classics”. I was devouring information, although my English was quite basic at that time. I must say that buying these books and magazines helped me tremendously in learning the language! 8This tiny book was more like a yearly review of the cars of the world, especially European cars. Lots of specs!
