During that same Summer, a good friend of mine went to San Francisco (California) and brought me this book as a gift. It was the first one given to me by a friend! 25A very old edition (1953) with lots of photos and illustrations of mostly quite boring veteran and vintage cars. Not too interesting and definitely not very enjoyable, it has remained closed most of its life in my bookshelves.

Yes, given the option to re-read them I'd probably do that too- in fact that's what keeps me picking up some of my books frequently too. Whenever I have the time to research a car or a make it's off to the bookcase (or Wikipedia when time is scarce).

Well, my friend, I must confess that my books have helped me keep some kind of mental sanity during these last two years!

In October of that year (1978) my parents went to Houston in order to celebrate their 40th birthdays. And they brought me these two books: 26The variety of featured cars is quite attractive although a bit strange, especially when it comes to postwar American cars. When new, the design of this book seemed very attractive to me, and it still is in a certain way! It was such a successful style, that even today many car books are still being published the same way, however, nowadays I avoid them at all costs, because they feel extremely generic! 27A fantastic, high quality book, filled with nice historical photos and beautiful illustrations of these gorgeous and truly unique automobiles!

These were also brought by my parents in October but I had to wait until Christmas to have them: 28At that time I expected something else! It is a good book with some nice photos however, it has far too many racing cars for my taste. It’s a book that I’ve learned to like after all these years! 29As you can clearly see in this photo, this book has had a very busy life! This remains one of my favourite books in my collection, it is filled with very interesting factory photos and lots of information. 30One more great book from the Dalton Watson series, filled with photos and interesting facts about these fabulous cars! 31Kind of boring and not as useful as my first Spotters Guide book. But one cool thing about it was the excitement of my maternal grandfather, identifying cars from his youth when I showed him this book. Because of this book I learned that he came to Mexico and met my grandmother thanks to a brand new 1934 Studebaker! Two years had passed since my first car book, and by this Christmas my collection was growing fast!

Very nice! Another Dutchman there, Rob de la Rive Box. I have on of the Spotter's Guides too, for European cars. Very interesting to see which European cars made it across.

I had no idea he was Dutch! His name always sounded kind of French to me! And, the Spotter Guide that you’ve mentioned arrived to my collection too, but a bit later...
