When I started this next one, I was not 100% sure whether it should be slotted under a display or a diorama thread? On reflection I think it is more of a display simply because of the shadow box picture frame it sits in. For years I have been eyeballing the creativity of picture framing with my own twist all associated with my model collection. My eyeballing started about sixteen years ago on one of our February Paris Retromobile 5-day tours. After spending the opening day looking around the Retromobile show we always had a four day plan to take in some of the old model shops around northern France before returning to the UK with a full boot of books, models and any other automania we could get our hands on. On one particular tour, I can distinctly remember going into one shop, long since gone I’m afraid, to be immediately struck by a number of small wall display cabinets around the shop. After trying out my pigeon schoolboy French the own further explained his displays by switching on the LED lights within. I was sold but unfortunately, they were not for sale. These basically looked like deep picture frames with themed models and associated advertising inside. Once switched on they came alive, and the idea stayed with me thinking “I can do that…….one day.” With that and my desire to learn how to create bespoke picture frames, a new post retirement hobby is now in its infancy. Retirement is looming and I have readjusted my moving target of March next year. In the meantime, I am gearing up over the last months of my full working career to enroll on some “how to make picture frame” courses. I attended my first back in April, just the basics but now have the desire to learn more, especially how to create deep shadow box picture frames which double up as mini wall display cabinets. This is my first attempt. LE MANS 1966 FINISH……. A birds eye view.
Jerry has already provoked this by starting his own Le Mans 1966 finish diorama, I just didn’t get mine going quick enough! His can be found in the diorama post section. This might be my first attempt but have to admit not building this shadow box. I acquired it a few years ago but knew exactly what I was going to do with it. The three pieces of paper act for positioning of 1st, 2nd and 3rd GT40's, all the right numbers but not necessarily in the right order!!! To get all three in, the best way to achieve this was to set them diagonally. White lines drawn in Holes from the model base plates measured marked and drilled into the backing board. Winner in position for initial set up. All three is position to ensure holes are in correct positions, which they were and so were the models All very early days but this is the sort of thing I'm after. Lots more to do. Will be back late folks.

Paul
Great start.
A wet road surface, the finishing line, the man with the chequered flag and some driver figures in the cars and it will look even better!!

Very nice Paul, what a clever idea! Are you going to put led lighting in as well? I can see a lot of possibilities with the shadow box idea and displaying vertically rather than horizontal. I will be following with interest.

I'm looking forward to seeing this Paul. I've also though of using a shadow box, but I was thinking of individual cars (Le Mans winners), displayed in 20 - 30 smaller boxes that could be rotated around as a way to keep the display fresh. Ikea do some inexpensive display boxes that would be perfect.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, gives me great encouragement. Trouble is life has other demands at the moment, so time spent progressing this has been very scant. Anyway, I have managed to obtain some more paint for the road look. Surprisingly I came across a silver metallic acrylic which I have brushed onto the black surface I had sprayed earlier. This I think has potential for a wet road look. I'm still experimenting. Lessons learnt so far is, paint it and then leave it. When dry the end result has a completely different look then when wet and applying. Practice makes perfect as they say. This is still work in progress, but I feel positive I’m getting there. The road is certainly not black having looked at colour photos in some of my LM literature. When wet it has a much more silver/grey tone. Without further ado some pics as of this afternoon. With silver metallic applied. The intention was always to have a caption, title, call it what you will in the top left hand corner. This triangle shaped print is my first attempt and could well change as things develop. I have been playing with the road surface again but feel I have gone backwards a little. Thing is you have to experiment to find what works best. Still plenty to do but my ideas buried deep in my head are slowly being converted into a reality. Below is my reference photo
