During the conversations with the local seller who the previous Red Line Ferraris were purchased from, it was discovered that he also had several Tecnomodel Ferraris from the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 2009 and 2010 Le Mans races generally prove challenging for Ferrari and Le Mans collectors as Red Line (Spark) lost the Ferrari licence for “reasonably” priced 1:43s at the end of 2008. Fujimi picked up this licence in time for the 2011 race, but 2009 and 2010 were left to Tecnomodel (or BBR) and these models tend to be hard to come by and attract a premium price, as they did when new. The news that this seller had models of most of the 2009 Ferrari LM grid was pleasing, but Ian and I were under no illusions that the prices would not be stratospheric. When the quote came back our eyes opened wide and most ended up winging their way to one of us. This is my first.
Ferrari’s participation in sports car racing in 2009 was limited to the GT2 class. FCA’s representation in the GT1 class was left to Maserati and their mighty MC12. In GT2 Ferrari would use their F430 GTC to face up to their old sports car rival, Porsche with their 911. Maserati would defeat Corvette to win the GT1 Title while Ferrari and Porsche slugged it out in GT2.
One of the Ferrari teams in GT2 was entered as Pecom Racing from Argentina. In reality the car was run by AF Corse for Argentinian drivers Luis Perez Companc and Matias Russo. Perez Companc is one of the eight children of Gregorio Perez Companc, one of the wealthiest people in Argentina. Perez Companc junior and Russo had entered the same F430 GTC (chassis F131 EVOGTC 2626) in the 2008 FIA GT2 Championship and had finished 5th in the standings. In 2009 they again fronted up for all eight rounds of the Championship. The Argentinian duo took one 2nd place in class on their way to another 5th place in the GT2 standings. They also took their F430 to Le Mans, which was not a round of the FIA series, and for this event the car was entered under the AF Corse banner. The third driver at Le Mans was Gianmaria Bruni who in 2009 was sharing an official AF Corse F430 in the FIA Championship with Toni Vilander. For Le Mans they were split up and placed with Ferrari customer teams.
The GT2 class at Le Mans was made up of 10 Ferraris, five 911s, and single entries from Aston Martin and Spyker with their pretty Audi-engined C8 Laviolette. Porsche set the pace in qualifying, the Flying Lizard 911 ahead of the Felbermayr-Proton car. The #78 AF Corse car was back in 7th, behind three other F430s and another 911.
The race would turn out to be a Ferrari benefit as none of the 911s made the finish and neither did the Aston. Only one F430 failed to greet the flag, leaving Ferrari to take 9 of the top 10 places in the GT2 class – the one interloper was the Spyker which finished 5th. This was one place ahead of Perez Companc, Russo and Bruni.
