Are You Still Below? by Miriam Nyhan by Michael, on Flickr Are You Still Below? The Ford Marina Plant, Cork, 1917-1984 by Miriam Nyhan The Collins Press, 2007 ISBN: 9781905172498 This book came about when Ford of Ireland executive Dennis McSweeney convinced University College Cork masters candidate Miriam Nyhan to write her thesis on Ford’s Marina plant at Cork. The book delves into the history of Ford’s first purpose–built overseas plant which opened in 1919 to build Fordson tractors. The book is part business history and part Cork social history, but really not a “car book.” It is worth mentioning here that when Henry Ford & Son Ltd was first established in 1915, it was an independent company and wholly owned by the Ford family. It is also clear from the book that the Irish are keenly aware of, and proud of, Henry Ford’s Irish ancestry.

Michael, I saw this book for sale today and thought of you. Pretty nice, lots of (b&w) pictures but in Dutch only.

Tom, that looks like an interesting, and somewhat unique (being Dutch) book. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Around The World in 40 Days by Michael, on Flickr Around The World in 40 Days Beginning on Labor Day 1963, two Englishmen, sponsored by Ford of Britain drove a new Corsair around the World in 43 days. This was less than half the time for the 1957 trip (but this 40-day figure did not include crossing the Atlantic). Unlike the five vehicle convoy of 1957, this 1963 trip had no support vehicles, just two drivers. This is the cover of a nice 30-page booklet Ford published on the journey.
