As you’ve maybe seen, Martin (Alfaholic) has recently been adding new Ferrari’s at a great pace recently and I've been doing the same. We recently came across a local collector downsizing his collection and couldn’t resist the opportunity to acquire some rare models. Included in a the haul of new models were several Tecnomodel Ferrai 430’s from 2009 that filled the gap created when the Ferrari licence transitioned from Red Line to TSM/Fujimi. As limited editions of only 100 pieces, these are not easy or cheap to find a decade after they were released, so to find these for a good price was a great feeling.
The first Tecnomodel Ferrari is this car from JMW Motorsport. 2009 represented the first of Jim McWhirter’s JMW Motorsports’ ten entries at Le Mans. The JMW team was closely linked with Dunlop and their cars have typically always run a ‘Dunlop yellow’ based livery. In their early years, the Essex based JMW team and Dunlop selected their liveries from a fan based design competition and in 2009, this livery from German designer Christian Baur was selected for their entry.
The JMW Ferrari was entered for the all British trio of Robert Bell, Tim Sugden and Andrew Kirkaldy. They qualified 8th in the 17 car field in the GT2 class, putting them 45th overall on the starting grid. They made great progress in the first hour, climbing 10 places to 35th overall. By the end of the sixth hour, they were running 33rd overall and had improved to 3rd in class.
By the midpoint of the race they were up to 28th overall and were running second in class. They continued to make further progress, climbing to 17th overall after 17 hours, before a puncture on the left rear tyre required an unscheduled pit stop that cost them five places and any chance of a place on the podium.
Nevertheless, they drove strongly for the rest of the race to finish 23rd overall and 4th in class.
