As a kid I had some art classes but then, when I got into studying design, I pretty much forgot art almost completely. In 1989, my brother had an art class with a well known local painter and that reignited my interest. Soon after my brother, I began having classes myself and became quite involved in the local art scene for the next few years. These were the first books that I bought soon after I started my art classes in 1990: 40No, this isn’t about the Cobra that most of you must be thinking about, but about a fascinating group of modern artists mainly from the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark, that I’m pretty sure Tom has heard of. 41Undoubtedly one of my favourite artists and therefore a must have in my then incipient art book collection! 42Probably my favourite contemporary painter, along with Lucian Freud and Georg Baselitz.

Very fascinating display of subjects, but no surprise with your background and education Julio. I probably don't have the expertise to really appreciate and understand 'fine art'. However, I do find an increasing interest and appreciation for architecture and landscaping. Noticing elements that would have once been overlooked. Maybe it's because I look at house plans about 4 hours per week

Nice art books! I have a Cobra book, but not that one. I had the feeling that you would be familiar with this kind of Cobra, Tom! These first two books were bought during a trip to Mexico City in July of 1991: 43A beautiful book, filled with absolutely stunning art, bought at an art exhibition of Catalonian artists at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. 44Rafael Cauduro is an amazing hyper realistic Mexican artist. Also bought at the Museum of Modern Art, after viewing a truly mind boggling exhibition of his work! This was bought here in Guadalajara (at Sanborn’s): 45A bit generic but nevertheless entertaining book on one of the truly archetypical objects of design! I bought this in November, during a short business trip to Southern California: 46A very interesting book about contemporary Mexican art, bought at an art gallery in trendy West Hollywood! And back in Guadalajara, and bought at the FIL that December. The Guadalajara International Book Fair, better known as the FIL, is the largest book fair in the Americas, and second-largest book fair in the world after Frankfurt's. It is also considered the most important cultural annual event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world. 47A rather useful book if you want to learn some of the basics about the human figure in fashion illustration.

All of these were bought here in Guadalajara in 1992. My art book collection was growing fast! 48
This is a fascinating book showing the unique, strong, beautifully creative work of Hispanic artists living in the US! I bought it during an Easter vacation trip to San Antonio, Texas! 49A book about an artist whose work has always puzzled me. Bought at a big, local art festival that, unfortunately, was held only for a couple of years! 50Its title says it all! A fabulous book dealing with the complex and quite varied contemporary art trends! Bought at Sanborn’s here in Guadalajara! These two books were bought in a music and bookstore at a local shopping mall, in December of that year: 51I’m fascinated by the work of these artists so this was a must! 52Beautiful, big book about this amazing artist!

These three books were bought in 1993… 53This was the first book of this series that I bought and I loved it! They are very entertaining, with lots of information and are packed with hundreds of great black and white photos . Bought in West Hollywood (along with the Dodge book in my other thread) during a ten hour long stop in L.A. while en route to Prague! 54The typical book you buy when you visit a mesmerizing city, such as Prague! 55Kippenberger is a fascinating artist that is sometimes quite hard to understand! Bough at the 1993 edition of Expo Arte, an international art fest that unfortunately didn’t last long!

Prague is said to be worth a visit. Doable by rail from Holland so I might go see it sometime.

These two books were bought in 1994… 56This is a beautiful book about the mesmerizing art of Julio Galán, my favourite Mexican artist! Bought at an exhibition of his work at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City. 57This book about contemporary Spanish artists is one of those books that I just don’t know why I bought. It’s not bad it’s just boring! Bought in November of 1994 at an art exhibition in Madrid, Spain.
