Very well. Since I haven’t had the chance to add models to my collection lately, I’m starting this thread to show you the rest of my own story through my books, and also because they might spark some interesting conversations. 1My first “adult” book, a gift from my maternal grandfather for my 11th birthday (1973). This is the edition in Spanish of a rather popular Reader’s Digest publication. I’m showing you the inside photo because of the lack of a dust jacket.

My first adult book was an encyclopedia that I got in 1976. Still have it, though it's more of a historic document in itself by now.

This was a gift from my mother, when I was 13… 2I don’t remember reading about Astrology before this book…

These two were gifts for my 15th birthday: 3I guess that, at that time, my parents weren’t sure where to get nice, thick, artsy books in Guadalajara, so they got me this book about famous gardens in Spain. Not very enjoyable, at least not for me… 4My first art book! My favourite aunt at that time, a graphic designer and artist, gave me this nice book since I was showing lots of interest in both art and design. She was quite right! Then, in 1980 came these three: 5A boring book bought during a visit to Disneyland in early 1980. 6Bought in Houston, in late 1980. This is a wonderful, extremely interesting book! Ideal for a future designer… 7At that time, I must have mentioned that I wanted a book about ships, so one other aunt gave me this as a Christmas gift that December. This book made me realize that what I liked were ocean liners specifically…

Nice, I have a couple of art books too. And a huge stack of design books, naturally.

These were the first non car related books that I bought when I moved to California, in 1982: 8A fabulous, absolutely delightful book that served me as an introduction to many great ocean liners! 9Fashion has always interested me too and I couldn’t resist not buying this book, filled with nice period illustrations!

While I love art déco, fashion has never interested me. I bet the book has some great illustrations though. Now art déco and architecture, that's my thing.

Great idea! And I'm immediately fascinated concerning the first book you've presented, the "Reader's Digest Atlas of Our Time"! Of course my family had the same in German (I guess this book was printed a billion times...), the German issue having a dark green cover. And I loved this book! There were only few books in my family , and so those few there were fascinating the more for me! I loved the photos with the strange and enormous nature wonders, far away from a German school kid, at a time when travelling was so expensive that you could only dream of seeing those things like geysirs and volcanos in real. A pity, I think I don't have that book anymore, have to ask my mother if she still owns it... And for the other books: yes, odd collection, but very interesting! Ships & Art Déco fashion - not bad, just my style!

Thanks for your comments and for sharing your story about the Reader’s Digest book your family had! I agree, it must have been printed many times and in many different languages! My parents had the older edition, with the dark green cover and, I suspect that my grandfather didn’t know that when he gave me this book. I wonder if my brother kept that green book…

Bought in Pasadena, in 1983… 10An extremely enjoyable book concentrating on the sketches done for this movie. At that time I was half way through college so, I devoured this kind of books! 11A controversial subject matter, so please, excuse me if I offend any of you. The things one buys as a youth!

The best he did was killing himself... Agreed! As is mine! Art Déco and architecture are also two of my favourites subjects. You’ll see… Cool, mate! This is, precisely, one of the reasons to start this thread. It’s a good way to know you all much better!
