In the spirit of renewed enthusiasm many have taken with the new site, I'm going to follow the prompt of Julio, Jeff & Tom and share a little slice of my corner of the 'world'. I currently live in St. Augustine, FL. I have ties to city dating back to 1988 (when I was still just barely a teenager). My parents purchased a second home back then and I've lived here full-time since mid-2020. Being in the NE corner of the Florida, this city is VERY much a tourist attraction as it's one of the first heavily-promoted towns when one travels south down the Interstate 95. One of the cities 'claims to fame' is that it is the OLDEST town in the US! It was actually settled in 1565 and has had occupation by a number of nations before the Union. The town boasts a wonderful Spanish-built fort on the Riverfront called the 'Castillo De San Marcos'. Original architecture shows a strong Spanish influence, but there are touches of British and French if you look closely. Before I bore you anymore, I'll let a few photos give you a feel. Would not be surprised if not a few of you have actually visited the town at some point? While I intend to only live here temporarily, I do very much appreciate its many charms and its great difference from the town that I lived in previously for 40 years!
BELOW: Typical 'touristy' photo op that I couldn't resist! This is the West side of the Bridge of Lions which crosses the Matanzas River. This river connects to the Atlantic Ocean about 1.5 miles NE of this spot. This Bridge is a 'drawbridge' and was totally rebuilt in 2007 amid much controversy. There was a great effort to keep the old Bridge which had become a huge safety concern. I think the new one is great and I crossed it today on foot while waiting for my Dad's doctor's appointment!
BELOW: One of 4 (I think) towers on the Bridge of Lions. At least one of these is the 'control room' for bridge attendant. That sounds like a pretty lonely job
BELOW: Looking West from the Bridge of Lions. A view of floating dock Marina. Noticed the name of the largest craft was 'Murphy's Law'? Who wants to bet that might belong to an accident attorney
BELOW: A bit smaller boat...hey "Tidy Bowl Man"...it's an old joke This was one of 2 young ladies that were doing about 50 MPH before reaching the no wake zone!
BELOW: Some sort of 'electrical/rental' bikes? I've seen these small depots in other parts of the city center within the last year or so? Sort of poor man's Tesla charging station
BELOW: Heading West off the Bridge of Lions into the "Plaza De La Constitucion". This is a 'park' about 2 acres in size and directly north of the Government House which served as the Governor's house for a few hundred years beginning in 1565. Lots of fun events here including live entertainment (buskers really), Christmas Celebrations, Art Bazaars etc etc. Again, this was an area of recent controversy as it housed a Confederate Soldier Memorial. The Statue was actually relocated to a different part of the county for display...
BELOW: The Cathedral Basilica which is directly NORTH of the park shown above. There are many old Churches in this area including an Episcopal Parish to the South.
BELOW: Naturally, one of my Favorite pics! This is a rental Electric "Mini Moke" in front of a Hotel on the Riverfront! There's business about 3 miles from this spot that has about 5 of these for rent. They have red, blue, green, yellow examples too! They also rent 'Slingshots' which seem far more popular
BELOW: The clouds to the SW put a spring in my step as I had to cross back East over the Bridge to get back to the car at doctor's office. You're looking at a typical street of restaurants, bars, hotels, gift shops etc. There is much more to show...if you find any of this interesting?

Am I the only one unable to view your pictures? Good question Tom? Anyone else? These are in a new 'folder' at the host, perhaps my permissions are wrong?

They do show up now. What a lovely place, thanks for showing us! Yes, I would love to see more.
We have the same electric rental bikes here in Utrecht, in the same colour but with a different name on them.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. Why is it that as soon as I saw the first few the unmistakable intro to the Miami Vice theme pounded into my head . Now where is my white Testarossa....

Showing the best off for sure, what a beautiful area. Next time can you take some pictures from inside a Florida Walmart next as a nice contrast? Slingshot rentals are a big thing around here as well.

All very fascinating Julio! Noticed the fence on the flat roof of the lavender colored building, one wonders what that is about, maybe rooftop dining like an earlier building? Several houses of worship and yes, the last one is really different from the rest! Any idea of the denomination of that one? Finally spotted a Pepper White Mini in the last one! I think that is a sign Julio
Also the street sculptures are fantastic! My favorite is the large man holding the board with all of the 'people to scale'! Any notes on its significance?

Wonderful photos Julio. I like the architecture and vibrant colours of the different buildings. I'm assuming the 3rd photo is a day-of-the-dead monument/shrine. I'm guessing the man with the blue shirt, dark shorts and "Columbia" visor in the first photo is not a local .

Thanks, BB! I’m pretty sure that that is a catholic church, like most others in Mexico. Tlaquepaque has several sculptures around its main street and they’re all related to the artisans that have made the village famous. Wonderful photos Julio. I'm guessing the man with the blue shirt, dark shorts and "Columbia" visor in the first photo is not a local . Thanks, Martin! I’m glad you’ve liked them! Yes, that third photo seems to be related to the “día de muertos” (day of the dead), although it’s still months away! And you’re quite right, Tlaquepaque is usually packed with tourists, many of them from the US and Canada.
